Why Do Lash Extensions Fall Out? Common Causes and Fixes

You just left the salon with a perfect set of volume lashes. But a few days later, you notice extensions shedding onto your cheeks or pillow. Is this normal? Are you doing something wrong? Did your stylist make a mistake?

Lash shedding is a common concern, but understanding why it happens can save you a lot of stress. Let’s break down the natural lash cycle, common aftercare mistakes, and how to keep your extensions looking fuller for longer.

1. The Natural Lash Growth Cycle (Normal Shedding)

The most common reason lash extensions fall out is entirely natural: your own lashes are falling out.

Every single eyelash goes through a three-phase growth cycle:

  • Anagen (Growth): The lash is actively growing.
  • Catagen (Transition): Growth stops, and the follicle shrinks.
  • Telogen (Resting & Shedding): The lash rests until a new hair pushes it out.

A healthy person loses between 2 to 5 natural lashes per day, per eye. Because extensions are attached to your natural lashes, when the natural lash sheds, the extension goes with it. If you see a natural lash attached to the base of the shed extension, do not panic — this means the adhesive held perfectly and nature just took its course.

2. Oil-Based Products (Premature Shedding)

If extensions are sliding off your natural lashes (without a natural lash attached), the bond has been compromised. The number one culprit is oil.

Oil breaks down traditional cyanoacrylate lash adhesive. Common sources include:

  • Oil-based makeup removers and cleansers
  • Heavy eye creams and serums applied too close to the lash line
  • Waterproof mascara or eyeliner
  • Naturally very oily skin (sebum can transfer to the lashes)

The Fix: Switch to strictly oil-free products around your eyes. Wash your lashes daily with a dedicated lash cleanser to remove natural sebum buildup.

3. Friction and Mechanical Damage

Lashes are delicate. Physical stress will snap the adhesive bond or, worse, pull out your natural lash prematurely.

  • Sleeping on your face: If you wake up with one eye missing significantly more lashes than the other, you are likely a side or stomach sleeper.
  • Rubbing your eyes: A habit often triggered by allergies or tiredness.
  • Picking or pulling: Often done subconsciously when stressed.

The Fix: Try to sleep on your back, or invest in a 3D sleep mask that protects the eye area without touching the lashes.

4. Extensions Are Too Heavy or Long

If a stylist applies extensions that are too thick or too long for your natural lashes to support, the excessive weight causes the natural lash to twist, droop, and shed prematurely. This is a sign of improper application.

The Fix: At LASHTOUCH, our stylists are trained to assess the health of your natural lashes. We will only recommend lengths and diameters (like our lightweight 0.05mm and 0.07mm volume fans) that your natural lashes can safely handle.

5. Poor Curing or Environmental Factors

Traditional lash adhesives require specific temperature and humidity levels to cure properly. If the salon environment is off, or if the client gets the lashes wet before the 24-hour curing window is complete, the bond will be brittle.

The Ultimate Fix: LED Gel Lash Extensions

If you struggle with retention issues, LED Gel Lash Extensions are a game-changer. At LASHTOUCH, we use a specialized gel adhesive that is instantly cured with an LED light.

  • Instant cure: You can get them wet immediately — go to the gym, take a shower, or go swimming right after your appointment.
  • Stronger bond: The LED Gel bond is highly resistant to oil and water compared to traditional cyanoacrylate.
  • Longer retention: Many of our clients report their LED sets last 1–2 weeks longer than traditional sets.

When to Get a Refill

Even with perfect application and aftercare, you will naturally shed about 20-30% of your extensions every two weeks. To maintain a full, flawless look, we recommend booking a refill every 2 to 3 weeks.
